“Never try to wear a hat that has more character than you do.” – Lance Morrow.

I wanted to do something humorous or playful tonight because I’m writing this post with my tail between my legs.
I’ve been at war with myself these past couple of days. I said (in my last post) that my goal was to post ONLY what I loved, and I’ve been tossing illustrations left and right since then.
Eventually, the realization hit me that I never really LOVE my illustrations. How sad is that?! Well, not sad at all actually. I think I learned a lesson.
After filing away (but not trashing) several unloved illustrations, I realized that what I didn’t love about them was the fact that they were all attempts at a more serious side of creativity.
Which can be a good thing… if you’re a serious artist, illustrator, or creator, but I think that maybe I’m simply not one of those. I need whimsy. Or sillyness. Or sometimes even foolishness! Life is serious enough on its own.
I kept telling myself, “I need to love this, damn it!” I put unnecessary pressure on myself and the whole thing backfired. You can’t force love!
So, I had to go back to the think tank… or the drawing board. I thought I’d revisit an idea that I had before… about hats. I thought I’d work on some whimsical or playful hat illustrations.
I liked the idea of this woman being anonymous, or incognito. She appears to be hiding behind her hat and glasses.
Maybe she’s a symbol of my own embarrassment… realizing that she has to come back here and admit that she needs to lower the bar. Haha!
Is that ‘words’ she’s about to eat?? Maybe it’s an eraser… and she wants to take back what she said.
Anyway, I do like this one. Very much, actually. Maybe because even though it’s playful, my heart was in it… and I knew what I wanted to do. There was a purpose behind it. Plus I gave myself permission not to love it, which most certainly took the pressure off!
So… maybe it’s not always about love. Maybe it’s also about purpose, a little whimsy… and the satisfaction of defying my own rules! Ha!
I think that’s all for now. Thank you for viewing/reading, I hope you enjoyed!
I’m hoping to be back with more hats… but you just never know… hehe.
Until next time,
Peace and Love!
“A crown is merely a hat that lets the rain in.” – Frederick the Great.
