That Friday Feeling

Have you ever spelled out a word and all of the sudden it looks foreign to you? That just happened when I spelled Friday. How weird! Anyway, I spent a few hours today creating this image to represent Friday.

I know that, for me, Friday nights are never a good time for blog views. It can be a little depressing, because what comes to my mind is that here I am – alone – creating images and talking nonsense… while the rest of the world is out having a ball.

I guess it’s FOMO, but it fades quickly. Just like we’ve learned from social media, real life isn’t always what it looks like in the pictures (or our imaginations) and – most of the time – we’re not missing out at all.

That was a little off point, but it’s true. Anyway, I thought… “why not make my image and post all about the day?” Of course, by the time you read this, Friday may be over, but rest assured it’s Friday as I’m writing this.

I suppose this might be considered a fun fact, which I haven’t done in a while, but it’s also a fact that you might already know (and as usual I’m fashionably late to the party).

The word Friday in English comes from the Old English word “frīgedæg”, meaning “day of Frigg.” Frigg is a prominent goddess (and wife of Odin in Norse mythology) who is associated with love, marriage, and motherhood.

In Latin, Friday was called “dies Veneris,” meaning “day of Venus” (the Roman goddess of love and beauty). When Germanic and Norse cultures adopted this system, they replaced Venus with Frigg, resulting in “Frīgedæg”.

Now, I’m no expert, but what I’m getting here is that Friday is heavily steeped in femininity. Maybe that’s why Friday has always been a popular date night? I don’t know. Also these fun facts are from Google so don’t quote me on them.

My original idea was to illustrate this goddess, but I ended up having a hard time with it. I had to switch gears. I’ve been wanting to do something with darkness… illuminated by both the moon and the interior lights, and this is what I came up with.

I loved doing it because I was able to upcycle two illustrations and turn them into silhouettes – the couple dancing upstairs, and the woman at the lower level window… patiently waiting for her lover to arrive on this lovely moonlit Friday night.

And now it’s nearing midnight… so I’ll say goodnight to you… and farewell to this lovely Friday.

Thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed my image and Friday fun facts.

Until next time,
Peace & love.

    I really like your image.

I remember years ago a picture entered my mind but since I didn’t know how to draw, sketch or paint, nothing came of it.

I should do it now that I’m into AI art image generation.

The picture was of a Friday or Saturday night.

    A street.

People are in their cars yacking on their cell phones (these were the days before there were laws against that)

and in an apartment window on the top floor of a building can be seen sitting alone at a table a woman sitting there by her landline phone 📞 waiting for it to ring.

Thanks Christopher! That sounds like a good image, you should try it. That reminded me of years ago we used to have a cruise night on Van Nuys Boulevard if you’ve ever heard of it. That was before cell phones even existed lol. I sure miss the days when it was cool and safe to hang out like that, and people were actually nice and happy. 😃. Anyway, keep me posted if you do that one I’d like to see it. Except the woman sounds lonely. She might need a glass of wine or something 😂
