Are you eXtra?

For anyone that’s never heard that ‘slang’ before, being eXtra means to be overly dramatic, flamboyant, or excessive in one’s behavior or appearance. It can also mean that they do more than is needed, or over the top.

A girl in one of my graphic design classes called me eXtra years ago, and –in all honesty– it was one of my favorite critiques during my stint there. Of course, I’d never heard the term before, so she had to eXplain it to me .

And although she was teasing me at the time, because I had done more than was required, I did take it as a compliment because I’d worked very hard on my project.

As far as the image, I wanted to do something abstract and any abstract art that I found online kind of led me to odd faces. It’s random, and probably has no relationship whatsoever with eXtra, but it’s what I wanted to do.

Maybe it’s eXtra because it started with half a face, and everything that was added after that point was eXtra (totally unnecessary).

Anyway, I thought of the word extra when I was thinking of words that start with X… so I doctored the word to hide the E.

Then I went looking for real X words, and I found two that seemed worth mentioning because I’d never heard them before and it’s always fun to learn something new.

Xenophile: someone who loves strangers, other cultures, or foreigners.

Xenophobe: someone who is afraid of strangers, other cultures, or foreigners.

Those words are perfect X words because not only do they actually start with the letter X, but they seem to go with my abstract woman (or is that a mask?) who looks a little foreign.

I think that I can be both of those things (a xenophile and xenophobe) but I’m too tired to elaborate. Brain fog!

And there’s not much else I can think of for X because my head’s already onto Y.
