Never blame someone else for the road you’re on. That’s your own asphalt.
Oh my goodness. I found that little saying in my phone – when I was deleting the old files – and I’ve been laughing for two days.
All I wanted to do was create an image to go with it. I had the background already. It was a pic I took from the train, when I went to my sisters house, and I spruced it up with effects way back when.
It’s been sitting around doing nothing, so when I was trying to decide where my little zebra’s road to nowhere might be taking him, I couldn’t think of a sadder place than somewhere near downtown Los Angeles.
I’m kidding. Sort of. I love the juxtaposition of the zebra in an urban setting – near the train tracks no less. And I was thinking as I was working on his stripes that illustrating zebras is very zen.
I work stripe by stripe, so in the beginning it looks like a real mess. Then, slowly, as more stripes are finished, it starts to come together and it’s amazing how cool it looks.
All I kept thinking was “boy, this has got to be teaching me patience.” I love the way he’s looking back. He finally saw the Dead End sign and now he’s looking back to see who he can blame for his misadventure.
He actually got a little tweaked when I did the effects, but I’ve saved the clean original so you may see him again down the road… in an upcycle. And I’m not really sure he’s a HE, but he didn’t want to ask for directions so I just assumed…. haha!
Well, that’s about all. I got my illustration fix in now, so I can sleep like a baby. Thanks for looking… I hope you enjoyed!
Peace & Love.
