Before I start throwing out my latest “Hat” Fun Fact, I want to say that while these tidbits of information are new to me… it occurred to me last night that I might be the only one who’s never heard of some of them (My apologies for that!).
Psychologically, I’m enjoying these fact finding missions because they force me to ask (and answer) questions that I might otherwise never think about. Or care about (Haha!).
I mean… I like the fact that the series instills in me a sense of curiosity – which not only stimulates my brain, but adds a new dimension to my otherwise “flat” world.
Not that my world is extremely flat (just a little boring at times), and… no… I’m not a flat-earther, but when I walk away from curiosity and simply take the world as it is, what is left? A flat existence, that’s what.
And just out of curiosity, I looked up what it means when you say that your life is flat because it came to my fingers before I actually thought about it or understood the meaning, so here’s what I found…
“Feeling flat usually means you feel without energy, direction, or motivation…” and “Feeling flat and empty can become a step towards depression.” I guess it’s good that I’m trying to make my life multi-dimensional again!
Scientifically, you might call this flatness Anhedonia – a term used in psychology (derived from the Greek words for “without pleasure”) which refers to “a reduced ability to enjoy your life.” You’re not necessarily sad, but not exactly happy either. Just blah.
Ok! So let’s get to the Fun Facts and see if we can muster up some pleasure!
Top Hats were once a prominent symbol of wealth and success, with taller hats indicating greater status. When I read that, one of my first questions was ‘who monitored this?’ Were there ‘hat police’?
How would a gold digger trust that the man in the tall hat actually had money? What if he was just some average Joe, walking around in a tall Top Hat that he found? Or stole!
I tried to make my character’s hat pretty tall, and I also started to think about this display of wealth and the showy tall hat… and greed came to mind. Think Ebenezer Scrooge.
I don’t know if people harped on greed back then – like they do now – but I’m pretty sure my character might be plagued with greed. And it looks like his walls are getting ready to cave in. Maybe he just learned a hard truth… that money can’t buy happiness!
Here’s one last interesting Hat Fun Fact. The term Mad Hatter came about after mercury-containing chemicals were used in the hat making process, ultimately causing health issues like tremors and slurred speech. Yikes!
So is this character even wealthy, or is he Mad as a Hatter? There must have been a lot of confusion back in those days.
Anyway, as I pondered my illustration, and the color scheme, I had a thought. What’s up with the purple?
I’ve heard that purple is often associated with royalty, which could be why it came to my mind for a wealthy man’s hat, but I have to wonder what else it is that draws people to the color purple.
That being said… if you haven’t guessed already… I’ll be investigating Fun Facts on the color Purple and I’ll be back to share my findings soon.
In the meantime, thank you for reading / viewing. I hope you enjoyed something here!
Until then,
Peace & Love!
