First of all, I slept on my idea and decided to give it more time before canning it. I figure if I keep the micro-fun-facts simple, there are thousands of things to post about! And Illustrate.
I thought about dance, and somehow made my way to a really Fun Fact about Conga Dancing.
The World’s largest Conga Line was made of 119,986 people! The Conga Line was done in 1988 at the Calle Ocho Music Festival in Little Havana, Miami… where it made it into the Guinness Book of World Records.
That’s a fun fact indeed!
The illustration was a blast, and fairly simple to create. I started with basic silhouettes and then had my fun by adding accessories and things… mainly hats. The idea was to show diversity, and I was really surprised how much a hat can say – at least in an image.
There’s a baseball cap, a cowboy hat, some interesting feathers, a beret, a beanie, something that looks like it might be a Chinese bamboo hat, and a ladies wide brim hat. That’s what they look like to me, anyway.
It can be boring to do an illustration of silhouettes because it’s basically a bunch of black figures over a background – so I had no choice but to mess around with effects in my free programs that replaced Photoshop, for now.
The problem with the effects is that the image loses definition, so I decided to share my original, unfiltered Illustrator version as well… just for comparison.

As you can see, there’s a lot more detail, but it’s bland. It reminds me of those paper doll chains that we used to cut out when we were kids. The edited version has more movement… like you can see the happiness in those record setting dancers!
Talking about this made me think more about the hats. Does a hat say anything about a person? Is it the hat wearers intention to tell the world something about themself, or is it just something to cover their head.
I prefer baseball caps myself… mainly because I’ve tried other hats and they make me feel strange. Or look strange. Maybe both. I think I feel like I’m wearing a costume when I put a hat on, so I feel like I should be going trick-or-treating or something… or take off the damn costume.
I’m not sure how I got from the World’s largest Congo Line to this… but it might actually be a perfect segway into my next Fun Fact post… something interesting about Hats! (Will I regret this later??)
In the meantime, what does your hat say about you?
I thought I’d throw that out there in case you’re dying to talk about your favorite hat. We can get attached to those things you know.
So, that’s about all for now. Thank you so much for reading/viewing. I hope you enjoyed something here!
