This may seem like a spoiler alert, but it simply cannot be because the ending of my story might even surprise mySelf. What’s with all of this “Self” stuff anyway?
So… My story began with the idea of a woman called Sugar (it’s a nickname bestowed upon her by her best friend Coco). Sugar is having trouble in life (too shy, too awkward, too fearful, and so on), so Coco helps her order up an alter ego from a strange little website.
In the meantime, Sugar has been dealing with this voice in her head that is constantly holding her back in life (much like many of us?), and this voice is basically at the root of Sugar’s shy, awkward, and fearful existence.
Once the alter ego (Sequoia Storm) comes to the rescue – or so we hope – Sugar begins to do some of the things that she’s always been too afraid to do. Nothing big, mainly dating and dancing. It might not seem like a lot, but it’s major for sweet little Sugar.
When the story left off, the voice in Sugar’s head was not too happy with Sequoia’s presence and it was telling Sugar that she needed to let this ‘alter ego’ go! But… Sequoia has come into a life of her own now, and she is not about to let that pitiful little voice scare her away.
That’s where I got stuck. Boo. The part of this that might actually be a bit of a spoiler alert is the fact that my idea was to end this with Sugar having to search for and find her “true Self,” somewhere in the midst of this war being waged in her mind.
What halted me was the fact that I wanted to add some humor, fun, and adventure to the story before Sequoia and this pessimistic voice were exiled.
First of all, trust me when I say that this story idea came from nowhere, but I knew it sounded fun. Well… this is where it gets interesting, because I started a new class on Monday and we are learning about Internal Family Systems Therapy (also called IFS).
What does IFS have to do with any of this? Well, IFS therapy literally deals with…. Drum roll please… all of the parts of ourselves that make us who we are! Oh, and also the fact that the way we work through some of the more problematic characters within us is by getting help from our true Self (and hopefully a therapist as well!). What a strange and bizarre coincidence!
This certainly makes my studies more interesting. Anyway, I thought I’d share this because I’ve been beaming with excitement since Monday and I needed to get some of that energy out of my body before I exploded.
I figured I’d make an illustration – which is actually quite random, but I thought that the woman appeared to be glowing – and it made perfect sense that this might be the result of her true Self shining through.
I also wanted to say that this means the story will be on hold a little longer while I learn a little more about this internal family of characters and our true Self.
I can’t wait to see where this leads!
That’s about all for now. Thanks so much for reading or viewing… I hope you enjoyed something here!
Until next time,
-Janet
