I was excited to take part in this prompt (almost a day late), so I scanned through my images thinking I would find something rustic, like a tree in the woods. I saw the folder with scanned family photographs and found this one of my great great grandfather, and thought it would be so cool for the prompt! Is that rustic or what? And, oh, the simple lives they must have led… From Laboratory to Consumer!
About a month ago I started digging around the internet to work on a family tree, but I’ve barely scratched the surface so far. I think I made it to my great great grandparents on my mother’s side of the family (the Scots-Irish side), so I have a long way to go with her family and then it’s on to my Dads side (his grandfather pictured above).
Talk about a writing prompt; wouldn’t it be fun to write a story based on what you can learn through your family’s history? Hmmm. That’s something to think about. Anyway…
I just thought this would be a fun image to share.

I believe that’s probably an old Watkins’ wagon.
My dad used to talk about those.
They’d often come round to my paternal grandparents’ farm when my dad was a kud.

Watkins may sound familiar to me too. Thanks for that info! Where was their farm if you don’t mind me asking.

Their farm was about 40 miles northeast of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Very cool. I guess they were all over then. I’m not sure where this was but my dad is from Missouri. So maybe somewhere there. I guess I’ll find out when I get further into my family tree research. ๐

Watkins did specialize in selling tonics and remedies.

I believe Watkins travelled all over the U.S. and Canada.
In fact I recall reading one short story in Elementary School where the story’s narrator talked about the Watkins wagon showing up on his parents’ farm and I believe the short story was set somewhere in the U.S. midwest.
In some museums in the Canadian prairie province of Saskatchewan, they do have old authentic Watkins wagons on display.

On a whim, I just googled Watkins Wagons and I noticed in one picture, they had the slogan on the wagon From Laboratory To Consumer like in your picture there, so it must definitely be a Watkins wagon. ๐
