Are We There Yet?

Whenever I say that out loud, I’m reminded of my childhood and the drive to my grandmother’s house every Sunday evening.

“Are we there yet?”

She didn’t live far, but the drive felt like an eternity.

It wasn’t like the destination was something that I actually looked forward to, it was that being in the backseat of my parent’s car was an absolute bore.

As an adult, I realize that a lot of my anxiety, dissatisfaction, and inclination to hurry are borne out of that same question, “Am I there yet?”

This inquiry has been a constant throughout my entire life, and the circumstances haven’t changed much at all: There is no definite or concrete destination that I am literally looking forward to, and I have to wonder if I’m still just absolutely bored.

Worse yet, am I still in the backseat?

After pondering this, I asked myself – over and over – how one might feel when they actually DO reach their destination (however obscure that place might be), and I kept coming up with the same answer…

Happy. Content. Satisfied. Grateful.

That being said, while it goes against the barrage of messages we receive throughout our lives – from advertisers, social media influencers, self-help books and videos – I realize now that I have just one simple response…

“YES… DAMMIT! I am here!”

I have arrived!

I suppose that there is some kind of weird reverse psychology at work in my life, because mentioning that I was tired of illustrating catapulted me into the idea of creating an image to represent my journal thoughts.

While it’s still in the early phase, and the excitement could taper off… this illustration was meant to convey the feeling of “arriving” – or should I say of “being exactly where you should be” – and what an incredible feeling it is.

Thank you for looking or reading, I hope you enjoyed!

    I love your illustration.

It reminds me of what California must have been like in the 1960s.
