Colors of Fun

“Color! What a deep and mysterious language, the language of dreams.” -Paul Gauguin

After my thoughts on Unfinished Business, I wanted to return to my other love… beautiful, bold and vibrant color. I think brighter tones can create a sense of tranquility, but they are also kind of hypnotic. And, for me, they also represent joy.

The woman here is not just relaxing, she’s unwinding from a crazy, fun filled weekend. Perhaps she’s a local, and the tourists have all gone home for the week (and she can now reflect on the handsome stranger she met yesterday! hehe…).

If you ask me, she’s got the best of both worlds. Solitude is nice, especially for introverts, but we all need a little social time too, to frolic and play, or at least have a meaningful conversation with someone other than our cat (or dog!).

I spent more time on this illustration than I do on most. I’ve decided that – as hard as it is – I need to spend more time and effort on my artwork (and stories) or I’ll never really have that “pride of work” feeling that I think I’m lacking.

Sometimes my illustrations are, for lack of a better word, drive-through style images. Quick and painless. I’m not being self-critical here… I’m thinking about how to add a sense of fulfillment to my work, and give you – the viewer – quality over quantity.

I think it worked on this one, for the most part. At the end I knew there was more that I could do, but I had just had enough. Little by little, step by step, I’ll continue working on my patience and tendency to rush, and eventually my illustrations might get a week or so of my attention!

I loved adding the woman. She was almost an afterthought, but I started thinking that since I do love illustrating females, maybe a good change would be to have them simply compliment a piece – not BE the piece.

So, there you have it. I can honestly say that I’m happy with this one. I took my time and I just love the colors! I wish I was there for sure. I may do one more scene of reflection… another contrast, so I’ll be back with that soon enough (hopefully after I’ve taken my time!).

In the meantime,
Happy Friday!
Have a beautiful, colorful weekend!

Life is art, live yours in color.
