Pulling an All-Nighter

I want to say that this is another illustration that looks nothing like my vision (exactly), but I’m going to stop saying that. It sounds kind of self-deprecating.

That is not my intention. I’d call it more like “self-critiquing,” and in order to do that productively… you have to be brutally honest with yourself. The same holds true in life, actually. If you’re always praising and complimenting yourself, you leave little to no room for improvement.

Anyway, this was the start of my new Fun Facts/Tips, etc., etc., series… and as you can see it’s off to a rocky start! I’m rethinking the whole idea, but let’s see how it goes.

I thought I’d focus on certain things. In this case, it’s sewing. My sister quilts, so I had her in mind when I did this. She kind of looks like that when she’s trying to finish several quilts a few days before Christmas.

My idea for the image was to have a seamstress layered over a quilt-like background. Like I said, it’s questionable, but there’s still hope.

So, as far as Fun Facts, I found a few interesting things.

First of all, Cotton can last 100 years or more, depending on the quality. I’ll interject here and tell you that it’s harder and harder to find real cotton shirts (for me, anyway). I think the fashion industry wants us to change out our wardrobe more often than every century, so they’re hiding the good stuff.

In regards to quilts in particular, it’s been said that they were used to send coded messages, especially during the Underground Railroad era. BUT, some historians like to argue that fun fact (how dare they!)… so don’t quote me. You have to admit, though… what a brilliant idea. I need to share that tidbit with my sister.

Other fun facts are that sewing has been around since the stone ages, and it’s also one of the oldest textile arts. This is the fun fact that actually led me to my illustration idea… which may or may not have gone astray.

I kind of like this micro-fun-fact idea because it’s nice to learn little things that are easy to remember, rather than a textbook full of info that goes in one ear and out the other. Speaking of which, I have a class starting Monday so I’ll have a lot less time to dilly dally.

On that note, I think that’s about all for now. I’m going to sleep on the Fun Fact idea again and see if there’s a new verdict tomorrow. The jury is out!

Until then,
…it’s a mystery.

Peace & Love! Thank you for reading/viewing… I hope you enjoyed!

I cannot count my day complete ’til needle, thread and fabric meet.
