I’m killing two birds with one stone tonight. For the letter H, I wanted to use the word hypnotic. It’s such a cool sounding word.
I’ve always thought of hypnotic as meaning something that puts a person into a trance, like a hypnotist, OR – when referring to people – a person that is mesmerizing or pleasing to the eye. You know, like you stare at them and can’t look away because you’re in awe of the way he or she looks – they are hypnotic.
While that is, in fact, ways that the word can be used, the thing I hadn’t realized was that ‘hypnotics’ are sleep-inducing drugs. I guess even Benadryl is a hypnotic; it’s considered a sedative-hypnotic. I thought that was weird.
It makes me question how drugs, even over the counter types, might play games with our minds. And if one of my friends were to call me and I were to say to them…”dude, I just took a sedative-hypnotic,” they’d probably think I fell off the wagon or something and that I had taken something wild. Not Benadryl. I don’t know. Maybe I’m the only one who didn’t realize this.
I made the image (above) because I wanted to play with lines and see if I could make something hypnotic. It was going to be a bizarre landscape (you can see water in the waves and the sun setting above), but my mind was wandering and I had to move on.
I started thinking of the letter I, and – after all of my thoughts on inducing sleep – I thought of the word Insomnia.

I can’t say that I have full blown insomnia, but I do have a lot of trouble sleeping sometimes. It goes in waves. The woman above is kind of how I feel when this happens, especially because I use my screens WAY too much.
As you can see, her computer screen is behind her and what appears to be happening is that electromagnetic fields are escaping and taking over her body. It makes sense, because sometimes when I can’t sleep I feel like electricity is racing around inside of me.
Plus I have pulsatile tinnitus which means that I hear my heart/pulse inside of my head, and sometimes I wonder if that too has to do with my screen usage or the electromagnetic fields that surround me day in and day out.
I know this is all probably TMI, but I’m covering two letters here… so humor me.
I’ve heard that Earthing, or Grounding (walking barefoot on grass, dirt, sand, or even on concrete) helps. I may try experimenting with that a little and, if I do, I’ll report back later. Let’s see if earthing or grounding can work as a ‘natural’ hypnotic and help me sleep better.
Anyway, I’m happy with my lady illustration. Her crazy eyes have really captured the way I feel sometimes – late at night.
So… H and I are done, and I’ll be moving on to the letter J soon. I’ve already chosen my word, and it will require more visuals than words, so my next post will be less wordy!
Thank you so much for reading / viewing… I hope you enjoyed!
