Solitude

“I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity.”

Albert Einstein

Every now and then I get the urge to erase all of my past posts so that my blog can begin anew… with a clean slate. I never follow through of course (too scary!), but I still think about it.

It’s like the old posts that I’m not very fond of have tarnished the site, and it will never be good again until they are banished from existence. Or the new posts don’t stand a chance, because the old ones have ruined the site’s reputation.

Ok, ok… I am exaggerating (a little), but I do often feel that I’ll never love the site until the entire thing is perfect – which happens never. I guess what I’m realizing in all of this is that I really know how to overthink and complicate things.

For a person who loves peace, quiet, and solitude… I certainly have a noisy inner life. My brain probably looks like the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles during rush hour! Which is very congested by the way.

Recently I thought that rather than trying to tear down the old and build new, maybe I should just focus on adding some simple, quiet, and pleasurable things – some minimalistic black and white illustrations of nature or other things that calm us. I thought maybe this could bring some balance to my site.

I’m getting most of my inspiration from photographs that I’ve seen, and this was based on a combination of two photos. I know it looks simple and easy but trust me, I found all kinds of ways to complicate it – trying to make just the right amount of blur and fog… sheesh.

Anyway, I have a couple more that I am working on but I wanted to share this one for now. I really like how the white water and sky blend together and look so pure, and it seems as though it could go on forever, which – for me – evokes the sense of eternity.

I guess that’s all for now. I’ll be back to share some more later… or perhaps add to my story (whichever comes first). Until then, thank you for reading or checking out my image – I hope you enjoyed!

This is great! Is it based on a photograph by Don Hong Oai?

Thanks Stuart! I had to look him up and I’ll say no but it was similar. Thank you for that info though, because his work is beautiful and is exactly the style that I had in mind. I had never heard of him before! The man in the boat was actually from a color photo.

Ah, when I saw your picture I instantly thought of his work. Another excellent Chinese photographer to look up is Chin-San Long, who created very painterly images. Don Hong Oai’s work is based on that of Chin-San Long. A lot of art from China has that feeling of peacefulness, solitude and use of empty space to portray emotion. I love this style of art.
