Having Enough

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt. John Muir

Sometimes I think or say something, and later I realize that it wasn’t 100% correct.

I try to look at it like there’s a lesson that I need to learn, or a new discovery that I can take away from it. I’ve mentioned before that it’s important for me to learn how to live sober, and that DOES (and probably always will) hold true—however—there are other things that I need to DO, and I always seem to put them at the bottom of my list!

Giving. Being of service. Carrying the message. Thinking more of others.

It’s not that I don’t have a huge desire to be selfless… I really DO! It’s that my mind keeps returning to my old thought pattern—which goes something like:

What do you have to offer? You’re not ready. You’re not well enough. You don’t know enough yet.

I can go on and on, but you get my drift. IF I allow myself to listen to and believe those thoughts… I’ll NEVER be ready! There’s this old belief system that was instilled in me at some point in my life, and (sadly) an every man for himself mentality, that keeps telling me… you WILL do great things for others… but FIRST, you need to ARRIVE.

Arrive where?!? I have no clue! It’s like there’s an imaginary finish line somewhere out there, and I keep believing that once I cross THAT, I will be strong enough, good enough, smart enough- or will have enough- to help other people. Like I said before… I’ve been sensing this season coming on for awhile now. This feeling that all I’ve been doing lately is stalling. It’s time to get into action- and start doing more to help those who are in need or are still struggling.

Last night it was becoming clearer, and then today at church… I think God was giving me a message:

It is time. “I” am enough for you.

Blessings… and please stay tuned. I’m excited!

The time is always right to do what is right. Martin Luther King Jr.

Thank you for sharing your walk of faith! I believe God equips us in advance for when we hear His Whisper that He has something for us to do. For example, when I volunteered to be on my church hospital care team ( the very first training created), I was really nervous about meeting a person in the hospital…someone I did not know. I still remember sitting in my car praying for God’s guidance and strength ! That visit and many others proved to me that God will prepare us and His Holy Spirit always with us! As you can imagine I came away so blessed from so many of those visits. I will pray for you to be ready when you hear God’s Whisper! I know you will be be because you are intently listening and waiting for His direction!

Thank you Rick! Yes… I get the nervousness when I just think about what I might need to do or need to say, etc., but I’m learning- slowly- that it is all needless worry. I appreciate your comment and prayers! Glad it’s not just me that can feel intimidated. 🙂

I believe you simply have much to offer. Simply be you.

I ‘m not great about memorizing scripture but you can find it…..the one which speaks is no one with any amount of worry or anxiety will be able to alter a single event! With my depression and anxiety, that has also been scripture for confidence and self – assurance . i also believe God would never send us unprepared! And we know we are not alone as God’s Holy Spirit is always with us as promised! Praying for you as you step out in faith!!!

I’ve been guilty of this, too.

It’s not entirely wrong. “Whenever God means to make a man great, he always breaks him in pieces first.” And the point is to shred our pride and self-sufficiency so that we are dependent on God and possessed of his mercy. So in that sense, I do think there are lessons that some of us must learn before we are ready to embraced God’s destiny for us.

BUT…I still agree with you that this threshold, whatever it is, is nowhere near perfection. “Arriving” as in leaving all doubts or struggles behind – well, that’s not going to happen.

I have recently sensed God calling me to realize that he is my strength and sufficiency to do whatever he’s called me to do. I knew this truth for years, but I didn’t realize until now that I was denying it in my life by demanding perfection from myself and comparing myself to others.

    Great stuff.

Yes and so funny you said all that. I’ve been sitting here thinking about it all. I’ve got more to reply to this, but I can’t find the words yet. lol. I will when it comes to me. Something along the lines of “stepping out in faith” vs. thinking we are, or need to be, properly equipped, if that makes sense.

P.S. Not saying that you or I necessarily want to be “great”. But I sense we both want to do great THINGS for God, at least.

Janet, from my experience, we all have roles on this path, you long to do as has been suggested, the best help one can be, is help you are not conscious of giving. The right thing to do is often obvious and not easy but I just keep putting one foot in front of the other, I often feel as though something is about to happen and I does but never has felt like it when it did. I didn’t realize what occurred until much later.

Your blog helps people. Your writing. Do not forget that, remember to give yourself credit for it. You are using your God given talent to inspire people .

But I sense that you have SO much love to give. So however God chooses to use you, I know it will be great.

I so know what you mean. I’m in the same spot. And I will go save the world … after I finally get sugar out of my diet. After I have a great meditation practice. After I develop more muscle tone. After I take a public speaking class. After my son is out of college. After, after, after ….

I hear you and I think I overstated when I said I want to do GREAT things. ANY thing would be nice! 🙂 In recovery, a man once said “we alcoholics think so grand and want to go save the world, when the simple truth is sometimes I forget to brush my teeth!” – I like to use forget to make my bed, because the teeth thing sounds gross… but I get what he meant. Get your own house in order first! But will my house ever be in order? That is the problem. Maybe not, but I can still help someone, with the smallest of things. Maybe just encouragement. 🙂 xoxo
